Take Time Off

A secret to coming up with new ideas and being innovative in the business world is on-and-off thinking. Creative breakthroughs happen when we let go of our focus on a problem and take a break to re-charge. It’s putting a project down for another. The brain can momentarily return to a feeling of excitement and aliveness. We are taught to focus on one thing, that we don’t have time for distractions, and shouldn’t have too much on our plates. We need those distractions.

This might be going to the gym, riding the King of the Hill track on your mountain bike, building something new in the shop, picking up the guitar and writing a song, training to run a marathon, or creating a new recipe in the kitchen. For me it’s leaving the office to climb a mountain.
