Geoengineering and Chemtrails: What’s Real, What's Not, What to Be Concerned About

By Daniel Stih – Aerospace Engineer, Environmental Consultant

Tucker Carlson recently aired a segment claiming, “The government has finally admitted that chemtrails are real… It’s called geoengineering.” Entertaining headline, yes. Accurate? Not even close. Tucker said he spent six months searching for a “credible engineer” who could explain chemtrails.

As an aerospace engineer who has studied atmospheric science for over 20 years, and personally met Clifford Carnicom, the man who started the chemtrail conspiracy in the early 2000s,  I want to bring clarity to a topic that has grown unnecessarily confusing.

Let’s set the record straight, with facts, engineering logic, and the solution-focused mindset this topic desperately needs.

Chemtrails ≠ Geoengineering

The entire premise of that Tucker episode was wrong because of one key distinction: Geoengineering is real. Chemtrails are not.

The U.S. government has not admitted chemtrails exist. What they have admitted — and mainstream science has openly discussed for decades — is that research into geoengineering is happening. Geoengineering is not spraying chemicals from jets. Geoengineering is large-scale climate intervention research, primarily intended as an emergency backup if global warming accelerates beyond expectations.

Chemtrails are simply contrails — ice crystals formed from jet exhaust — that can spread into cirrus clouds depending on atmospheric humidity. They are not a climate program. They are physics and weather.

What Geoengineering Is

Geoengineering falls into two main categories:

1. Solar Radiation Management (SRM)

Aim: Reflect sunlight back into space to cool the Earth. Methods include:

Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI)

This is the big one scientists study. It would mimic volcanic eruptions by releasing sulfate aerosols high in the stratosphere. Other proposed substances include calcium carbonate or titanium dioxide.

Challenges include: the particles must be uniform in size to reflect sunlight effectively, delivery requires high-altitude aircraft or balloons, and the effects may last only days to weeks. You’d have to spray constantly, as stopping suddenly could cause rapid warming (“termination shock”). Who decides? Who pays? Who controls the thermostat? No global governance exists.

Marine Cloud Brightening

Spraying microscopic sea-salt to make clouds more reflective. Unknowns include: More cloud = less rain in some regions. Effects vary dramatically by location. Could alter global weather patterns unpredictably.

Cirrus Cloud Thinning

Seed cirrus clouds to reduce their heat-trapping effect. Theoretical.

Space Mirrors

Gigantic reflectors in orbit. Physically unrealistic. Economically absurd.

2. Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR)

Aim: Pull CO (carbon dioxide) out of the air.

Techniques include direct air capture machines, ocean fertilization, biochar, enhanced rock weathering, and reforestation These do not reduce emissions. They try to clean up the mess. They are slow, expensive, and are known to have side effects.

Why Geoengineering Is Being Considered

Some scientists believe we’re running out of time and there are massive opportunities to profit. As with any billion-dollar emerging industry, the incentives can get messy. Geoengineering is not a climate solution. It’s as emergency solution. It's invasive, risky, and likely to create new problems, even if it solves one.

What Are Chemtrails?

Chemtrails do not exist.

What people call “chemtrails” are:

  • Normal jet exhaust
  • Freezing cold temperatures
  • Humid air
  • Forming ice crystals
  • That  spread out into artificial cirrus clouds due to sublimation.

Factors that affect contrail appearance:

  • Temperature
  • Wingtip vortices
  • Atmospheric saturation. Humidity at a given altitude on a given day

On humid days, contrails linger. On dry days, they disapate quickly. This has been documented since the 1940s. Old movies, old photos — they’re full of contrails. We didn’t pay attention. Note: there's a staggering number of planes in the skies today compared to when airplanes were invented. The frequency of chemtrails increased with increased passenger air travel - not because more planes are spraying us - rather, there are more planes in the sky.

Why People Confuse Chemtrails With Geoengineering

1. Language overlaps.

“Stratospheric aerosol injection” sounds like “spraying.” It is not happening.

2. Weather modification does exist.

Cloud-seeding for rain is real. It's local. Nothing as global climate manipulation may be.

3. People find metals in rainwater and think jets are spraying them.

No one has studied this using scientific methods. People collect rainwater after aircraft fly overhead and there are no baseline controls. If you don’t collect reference samples on days with no contrails, you can’t make a scientific conclusion about the cause. Chemtrails are not present when it's raining. The rain samples were collected at a later time. The difference between the time chemtrails are visible and rain sample collection, as well as other other changes in conditions, were not recorded or considered. Personally I find the detection of barium and aluminum in water samples interesting. I wonder what the true sources are, and if it's unhealthy, what we can do to reduce them. Focusing on chemtrails is a distraction from making real positive change.

The Real Problem Isn’t Chemtrails — It’s Geoengineering

Chemtrails are a distraction. Geoengineering is where the real concern lies — and it’s not because it’s happening, but because people want to start doing it. Geoengineering could shift monsoons, cause droughts, change global food supply, alter rainfall patterns, acidify oceans, trigger geopolitical conflict, and become weaponized as climate warfare. If the U.S. cools its region, India’s crops might fail; If China brightens Pacific clouds, Mexico might lose rainfall. Who decides? Who benefits? Who suffers? There are no official answers. No governance exists.

Why I Believe Geoengineering Is a Waste of Time and Money

As a society we say: “We don’t have money to feed the hungry, house the homeless, or rebuild cities.” We have money for billion-dollar aerosol programs, cloud experiments, atmospheric reactors, and CO capture machines. Instead of helping humans right now, we’re funding climate tech that will likely create new problems, then funding solutions for those problems. This is engineering failure.

What Responsible Climate Engineering Could Look Like

If the world insists on researching geoengineering, we need :

1. Global Governance

International rules.
Transparency.
Shared raw data.
Open-source climate models.
Independent oversight.
No secret programs.
No corporate secrecy.
No competitive advantage.
No one should be allowed to hide data.

2. Slow Ramp-Ups

Micro-experiments only.
Stop immediately when harm appears.
No billion-dollar “too big to fail” deployments.

3. A Real Exit Strategy

What’s the shutdown plan?
Who funds it?
Who enforces it?

What You Should Be Concerned About

  • Geoengineering experiments are happening.
  • Large-scale climate intervention could become real — fast
  • There are not plans for oversight, safety, and stability

Chemtrails are not geoengineering. The real danger isn’t “they are spraying us,” rather it’s the reckless attempt to control planetary systems we barely understand. The solution isn’t panic. The solution is awareness, transparency, and better data.

Start by questioning the simplest assumption: Is the climate problem even what we’re told it is?

In another episode, I show how to download real temperature data for your city and graph it using a Python script. You don’t need to trust me. You don’t need to trust the media. You don’t need to trust government scientists. Check the data yourself.
