Debunking Chemtrails

If you ever look up in the sky and wonder if there are planes spraying chemicals on us, you’re not alone. I once believed in this conspiracy theory. Over the years my perspective changed, as I dug deeper and saw it for myself.

Chemtrails are believed to toxic substances deliberately being sprayed into the atmosphere by aircraft. Some think they're responsible for everything from health problems to climate manipulation.

My introduction to them was in the year 2000. I thought it was ridiculous. Then I started watching the sky. Most days the sky was clear,  then suddenly on some you see planes criss-crossing the sky, leaving behind a persistent contrail than, looking and behaving different than a “normal contrail” became known as a chem trail (a trail of chemicals).

Under certain atmospheric conditions, you will see the exhaust trail behind the airplane (not actually coming from the engine it's coming from the rear and/or from the stabilizers.

Conspiracy theories start because people get these crazy ideas and other people think they're being helpful as they offer to explain them. The trouble starts when those with good intentions are wrong - their explanation is not the correct one.

For example, weatherman. The Santa Fe Reporter in New Mexico, for example,  did a story on the top 10 conspiracy theories and why you're wrong. To dispose the idea of chemtrails they asked the local weatherman to explain why airplane contrails are persist on some days, but not others. Th weatherman said it’s like your breath on a cold day - condensation. This is incorrect. Contrails known as chemtrails are not formed due to condensation. As a matter of fact - it’s not possible for them to do so. Lacking the correct explanation, the conspiracy is fueled. Watch the sky. Notice on certain days the contrail from airplane fans out into a big cloud. This is what people think are chemicals.

The conspiracy started because someone such as Clifford, thought they were a genius and published information that seemed to make sense: These are not normal contrails, they are not from condensation, the official (weather men) explanation does not make sense, therefore here’s what I think (fill in the blank). Clifford filled it in as chemtrails. For some reason he thinks some secret organization or government is spraying us with chemicals. Because no one else can explain it - because news reporters asked the weatherman instead of an aerospace engineer or better yet a pilot - the conspiracy spreads.

I was a believer until I meet the person that started it- Clifford Cornicopia. He was the first to write about chemtrails i at a time when articles were printed. There was no online. If you wanted to get anything published you had to actually get a publisher to believe in you and then print it. Clifford did so in the free Health magazines and free publications.

I got the opportunity to meet Clifford when I was at a live, terrestrial radio show about 15 years ago. I was waiting in the hallway for my turn to be on the air. Clifford sat down next to me. I was in awe - wow you're the guy. By this time I had experience with environmental testing for my day job -   air quality testing, particulate testing, all kinds of environmental testing - bacteria, mold, chemicals

One of the things Clifford wrote about planes are dropping barium on us and they're dropping microbes and bacteria and all stuff.  So I asked him about his testing methods. How did he test the air in the sky and conclude these planes were dropping chemicals and biologicals on us? I was immediately disappointed.

Instead of sending his samples to a laboratory, he built his own test equipment at home. If he’s that smart fine, but he collected“samples” by leaving bowls outside in the rain to capture what he believed a plane sprayed in the sky -  waiting for it to fall out of the sky, to the ground in the rain. Not scientific.

I said, OK Clifford, where’s the control - did you collect and test samples when there were no chemtrails?

He had not. He has not.

So there’s no science behind what he did. People reading those stories didn’t understand this because they never met him and asked how he came to his conclusions.

He would leave petri dishes outside and claim the same thing - mold grew in them after planes flew over dropping chemtrails. These petri dishes were used for the bacteria and the microbes that he claims are being dropped on us.

BTW - homeowners do this when testing their home for mold. It’s not scientific or accurate. They go to Home Depot, buy these petri dishes,  leave them out, and say mold grew on them so there must be mold in my house.  That’s not accurate. Leave a piece of wet bread out long enough and it will grow mold. It’s why we need refrigerators. Mold spores are in the air everywhere, under any kind of condition. You have to collect control samples. When testing your home for mold this is done by placing dishes outside as well as inside but that’s still not going to get you accurate results. The same volume of air must be collected for each sample, something you need an Anderson air sampling device for.

I asked Clifford, “Did you collect samples when there were no planes in the sky?” Well of course this is actually not even possible. There are always planes in the sky, ones you can’t notice because there’s no contrail at all behind them.

When you don't see the chemtrails it's not because there's no planes in the sky -  it's because the atmosphere isn't cold enough and saturated with moisture and so forth to where the planes make this phenomenon.

Despite my disappointment I continued to believed in the chemtrails and was passionate about proving we are being sprayed with chemicals.  I brainstormed with Clifford on how together we might scientifically prove chemtrails existed. I suggested we needed to capture air samples directly behind airplanes that were spraying us and compare them to samples we collected under normal conditions when the sky is clear blue and from airplanes making “normal” or on contrails.

We’d need to find a way legally to get in an airplane on short notice, fly up right behind a jet airplane that was making chemtrails (Southwest airplanes) and collect air samples to be analyzed for various things. Then I told them we would need to do controls when they're not (from behind airplanes that are not forming contrails) and collect samples from a random list of locations around the globe. Ee would need to send them to accredited laboratories to do the analysis. And we would need to repeat this - that’s engineering - do it again and again so you know no other variables are factors. In this case that might have been air temperature, altitude,  weather, day  of the week, and so forth. I'm guessed it might cost $100,000. So nothing happened for years.

Then one Christmas I received a digital camera with a powerful zoom lens. When the planes were flying over head making this phenomenon I went on my deck, put the camera on a tripod, and started filming planes. When I analyzed the footage - looked at the footage on my computer - I thought, Wow! That's strange. The planes I filmed - I could see the belly and the colors - were Southwest airplanes - passenger jets, not the kind we expect to see if some global conspiracy were involved.

The trails were not coming from the engines or the wings. There was no visible sprayers. You might think if they were spraying us, the stuff would come out of the wings - that’s where you would store chemicals. That’s where fuel is stored. It allows for storing large amounts and helps balance the plane. It was not coming from the wings nor the belly rather only the rear stabilizers.

Here’s what I discovered :

On certain days, at specific altitudes, the air is so cold AND saturated with water vapor, that the compression resulting from the wings causes water vapor from the engine to condense. And perhaps vapor in the ambient air - not just vapor from the engines. And it’s so cold that ice crystals immediately form. That’s part one.

Part 2 - Add to that these ice crystals then cause the water vapor around them in the atmosphere to attach to them, as occurs in a freezer without an automatic defrost. The word for this is sublimation, not condensation. Once the process starts, other water vapor water molecules in the  air start attaching to the ice and more attach. This eventually leads to the creation artificial cirrus ice clouds. This why chemtrails look thin and wispy - not as puffy clouds. They're artificial cirrus clouds.

My final aha moment came when I discovered the intergovernmental panel on climate change report: Aviation and the Global Atmosphere. It explains in details how these contrails (chemtrails) form and lead to artificial ice clouds.

Why does the panel on climate change care? A skier knows that on cloudy days it's warmer as clouds hold heat. It turns out these artificial clouds are significant in terms of climate change - probably a bigger factor than CO2. The glare from these clouds bothers me. That’s because these ice clouds are reflecting heat back to Earth.

The report addressed two potential solutions for eliminating these contrails. One is easy. Pilots of spy planes back in the day - they knew about this and would put rearview mirrors on the airplane so they could tell when they were at an altitude with atmospheric condition such that this phenomenon was occurring because otherwise the enemy might see them. They’d look in their rear mirror and if they saw this type of contrail change altitude. It’s that simple. In fact, there is a patented system by which these Southwest airplanes and everybody else in sky could use to eliminate this phenomenon. The planes would change altitude and the control system would alert them to do so. They don't want to do this because it costs money. Companies that own airplanes want them to fly at optimal altitudes - go high enough where the atmosphere is thin and there's not as much drag - you can go faster on less fuel. You don't want to go too high, as it takes fuel to get there, and of course the weight of the airplane is taken into account. There’s a sweet spot for getting people to the gate on time and maintaining optimal fuel consumption to save money If I tell you have to change altitude - I don't want to do that.

The other option the panel for climate change came up with is ironic for those concerned about chemtrails - a fuel additive. It’d have to come out of the engines and get into the atmosphere. Basically that would cause us to be sprayed with chemicals.

CONCLUSION

After careful observation and additional research I came to realize what we see in the sky is driven by atmospheric science. It not a government plot to spray chemicals. My motto is see it for yourself. Question everything. Don’t take someone's word for it. Get a telescope or a high-powered camera and examine these trails closely.

If you’re curious about the science, check out the climate report. Yes normal contrails are generated from the condensation of the water vapor from the engines. That water vapor dissipates quickly like your breath on a cold day before it can condense and turn into ice crystals. Normal trails don't persist in the sky.  The engine exhaust is not required to generate the contrails we call Chemtrails. They for by a process called sublimation . You’re being exposed to artificial clouds not chemicals falling from the sky. If you want to stop the Chemtrails push for implementing a flight control system that alerts the planes to change altitude when the phenomena is occurring.

The real conspiracy is how did I believe this for so long.

Two thoughts come to mind. One is lack of correct information. I didn't have a high video camera. ; The climate panel report hadn't been released.

Number two is misinformation - article like those from Cifford and  the news paper asking the weather man or similar “expert” (who has a pre-drawn conclusion) to explain.

Number three is who started it -  Clifford. Someone observed something they couldn’t explain. They questioned their observations. Kudos. Question everything. They ran experiments. Great. But they didn’t have a good scientific experimental design. And they jumped to the wrong and illogical conclusion bases on bias. It’s okay if you're not a scientist and get your design of experiment wrong. The trouble, a conspiracy, starts when a real media spruce publishes it. Free speech I supposed. I blame the publishers.

Thanks for reading and thank you for listening to my podcast.

Keep questioning everything.
