Those are not the same.
Many think a thermal camera sees:
• mold
• moisture
• heat loss
• hidden defectsIt does not.
A thermal camera measures infrared energy.
What makes thermal imaging powerful is what makes it easy to misuse. The same pattern can have multiple explanations.
A cold area, for example, could be due to:
• moisture
• missing insulation
• air leakage
• reflected infrared energy
• material differences
A common mistake I see is confusing what was measured with what it means.
That’s why thermal imaging is more useful when combined with building science, testing, and critical thinking, and not as a shortcut to a conclusion.
