This is Not a Mold Camera

Watch the full video here.

The image is an observation. An interpretation is the conclusion.

Those are not the same.

Many think a thermal camera sees:

• mold
• moisture
• heat loss
• hidden defectsIt does not.

A thermal camera measures infrared energy.

What makes thermal imaging powerful is what makes it easy to misuse. The same pattern can have multiple explanations.

A cold area, for example, could be due to:

• moisture
• missing insulation
• air leakage
• reflected infrared energy
• material differences

A common mistake I see is confusing what was measured with what it means.

That’s why thermal imaging is more useful when combined with building science, testing, and critical thinking, and not as a shortcut to a conclusion.
